Don’t toss those empty toilet paper rolls—turn them into a snappy alligator instead! With just a few simple steps, you can transform what would be waste into a fun, eco-friendly craft. This project is perfect for kids who love animals and want to learn more about sustainability, and it’s a great way to reuse household items that might otherwise end up in the trash.
Let’s dive in and see how you can create your own recycled eco-friendly alligator!
Why Use Toilet Paper Rolls for Crafting?
Toilet paper rolls are one of the most common household waste items, but they’re also a fantastic resource for crafting. Not only are they biodegradable, but they’re also easy to work with and versatile. By turning them into art, you’re reducing waste and giving kids a fun way to explore creativity while learning about reusing materials.
Materials You’ll Need:
Empty toilet paper rolls (3-5 for a longer alligator)
Non-toxic green paint
Recycled White and Green Colored Paper
Paper Scraps
Scissors
Non-toxic glue
Markers or colored pencils for detailing
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Snappy Alligator:
Step 1: Line Up the Rolls
Start by laying out your empty toilet paper rolls in a straight line to form the body of the alligator. You can use three rolls for a smaller gator or more if you want to create a longer reptile.
Step 2: Paint the Rolls
Grab your non-toxic green paint and cover the toilet paper rolls completely. Let them dry for a few minutes. You can also add some extra texture by lightly dabbing a darker shade of green or brown to mimic the alligator’s scales.
Step 3: Attach the Rolls
Once the paint has dried, use eco-friendly glue to connect the rolls. You can glue them side-by-side to form the alligator’s body, with the middle rolls being the torso and the end rolls serving as the head and tail.
Step 4: Make a Snout and Add the Eyes
Cut the green paper in a triangular shape and as wide as the toilet paper roll. Attach it to the first toilet paper roll. Cut the white paper into circles and color the pupil inside of the white then glue on the widest part of the snout.
Step 5: Create the Teeth and Details
Draw or cut out some sharp teeth from scrap paper or an old magazine and glue them under the head. You can also use markers to add details like scales, a nose, or claws.
Step 6: Add Legs (Optional)
For an extra fun twist, you can use small pieces of leftover cardboard to create legs for your alligator. Cut out four simple leg shapes and glue them to the sides of your alligator’s body.
Why Eco-Friendly Crafts Matter
By creating this toilet paper roll alligator, kids are not only learning about the animal kingdom but also getting a hands-on lesson in sustainability. Every time we reuse materials, we help reduce waste and protect the planet. Encouraging children to think creatively about what they can repurpose around the house is a great way to instill eco-friendly habits from a young age.
Make Crafting a Conversation Starter or Part of Your Lesson
While crafting, take the opportunity to teach children about alligator habitats and how human activity, like pollution, can impact wildlife. It's a great way to make crafting educational and deepen their appreciation for the environment.
You can watch the "What Happened to the Everglades" episode 15 of the Mermaid Elle Saving the Seas YouTube series before, after or while you make your eco-friendly alligator!
Happy crafting, and remember, every small step toward sustainability makes a wave of a difference!
